Client Overview

Client Name: Ryder
Industry: High-End Manufacturing
Client Focus: Advanced production technology and high-quality products
Project Type: Prototyping for Smart Gaming Machine
Client Requirements
The customer, Ryder, a leading high-end manufacturing company in the gaming industry, required parts for their smart gaming machine. The project involved creating internal reinforcement components that would be part of the main body of the airplane controller. The parts needed to meet the following critical requirements:
Dimensional Tolerance: Exact specifications as required by the customer.
Material Properties: The components must withstand intense impacts, sliding friction, and bearing assembly.
Advanced Manufacturing: The client required cutting-edge production technology to ensure high-quality, durable components.
Rapid Delivery: A quick turnaround time to meet project timelines.
About the Project
Before partnering with Lauens, Ryder had previously conducted tests on internal parts of their smart gaming machine but was dissatisfied with the material used. The original components did not meet the performance expectations in terms of durability and strength.
After analyzing the customer’s previous results, Lauens identified that the solution lay in using PA + 30% GF (Polyamide with 30% Glass Fiber) material, which offered superior strength and durability compared to the materials initially used. This material choice also aligned with the client’s requirements for impact resistance, friction durability, and bearing assembly.
Given the urgency and precision required for this project, we selected SLS 3D Printing technology as the ideal production method. The technology allowed us to efficiently produce high-quality prototypes while meeting the 7-day production cycle.
SLS 3D Printing Technology
Selective Laser Sintering (SLS): This is or a laser direct production method where by layers of powdered material are advantageously fused by the action of high powered laser. SLS is most effective in producing fine, high-stress functional parts with demanding design geometries.
Material Used: PA + 30% Glass Fiber, a robust and impact-resistant thermoplastic material.
Precision: The SLS process ensures high precision with typical tolerances ranging from ±0.05 mm to ±2.5 mm, depending on the complexity of the part and material properties. For materials with smaller particle sizes (less than 0.1mm), the accuracy can reach within ±1%.
Advantages: This method allowed us to produce the required parts quickly while maintaining strength and durability, with the added benefit of no need for expensive tooling or molds.
Project Execution

Material Selection: PA + 30% GF was selected for its outstanding mechanical properties, including high tensile strength, impact resistance, and thermal stability. These features were critical for the internal reinforcement components, which needed to withstand rigorous conditions in the smart gaming machine.
SLS 3D Printing Process: This was made possible through SLS since we are in a position to develop the elements into the exact size that the customer wanted. Build up layers of the powder material were employed in building the part and laser was used to selectively sinter the particles to provide the part with the structural integrity and dimensional stability layer by layer.
Rapid Prototyping: It made us realise the production of 24 parts that have implemented SLS process and only took 7 days to meet the client schedule.
Quality Assurance: We ensured that the final prototypes met the customer’s exact specifications, conducting thorough checks for dimensional accuracy and material performance under the required stress conditions.
Results & Client Satisfaction
Performance: The components successfully met all of Ryder’s performance criteria, demonstrating excellent impact resistance, friction durability, and bearing assembly compatibility.
Speed: The 7-day production cycle allowed Ryder to meet their project deadlines and proceed with subsequent testing and development stages.
Cost-Effectiveness: This paper demonstrates that using SLS 3D printing it is possible to develop high quality and highly complex parts in a very efficient and cost effective manner without requiring molds or tooling.
