How should I prepare files for sheet metal fabrication?

Prepare a complete production package so the manufacturing team can review your sheet metal part efficiently and provide a project-specific quotation. Include the files and requirements below to avoid clarification delays.

1. Provide the right file types

  • 2D DXF or DWG: preferred for laser cutting, punching and flat-pattern geometry.
  • 3D STEP or IGES: useful when the part includes bends, formed features or an assembly context.
  • PDF drawing: include one when dimensions, tolerances, notes or revision-controlled requirements must be followed.

2. Include material and forming details

State the material grade, sheet thickness, required quantity and any preferred process. For bent parts, identify bend direction, critical bend dimensions and any areas that must remain cosmetic. If you have a required surface finish or colour, include it with the drawing.

3. Mark critical requirements clearly

  • Highlight critical dimensions and tolerances.
  • Identify hole sizes, threads, countersinks, inserts or other secondary operations.
  • Specify deburring, edge condition, surface finish and inspection requirements where relevant.
  • Attach reference images for appearance-sensitive or mating parts.

4. Send what you have for a manufacturability review

If the design is not final, send the current drawing or model and identify the features that matter most. Our engineering team can review manufacturability, clarify missing information and provide a project-specific quotation with a feasible lead time.
