Formatos de archivos CAD para el mecanizado CNC: qué enviar para solicitar un presupuesto

For a CNC machining quote, send a 3D model plus a dimensioned 2D drawing whenever possible. We currently accept STEP (.step/.stp), IGES (.igs) and STL (.stl) for 3D geometry, and PDF or DXF (.dxf) for 2D drawings. A model shows the shape; a drawing communicates the requirements that may not be present in the model.

Which file format should you send?

FileBest use in a CNC RFQWhat to check
STEP (.step/.stp)Preferred 3D exchange format for machinable solid geometry.Confirm the exported model is the final revision and opens as a solid.
IGES (.igs)Alternative 3D exchange format when STEP is unavailable.Surface files may need clarification or repair before quoting.
STL (.stl)Mesh reference or early design review.A mesh does not reliably carry editable solid features or manufacturing tolerances; include a drawing and ask us to review it.
PDFDimensioned 2D drawing for tolerances, notes and inspection requirements.Show units, revision, material grade, finish and critical dimensions.
DXF (.dxf)2D profiles and drawing geometry.Confirm scale, units and which lines represent the required cut profile.

For most custom milled or turned parts, the most useful package is a STEP model + PDF drawing. If you only have another listed format, send it with the information below and we can review what is needed to quote accurately.

What information belongs in the drawing or RFQ?

  • Material grade and condition, not only a broad label such as “aluminum” or “steel”.
  • Quantity for the first order and any expected repeat volume.
  • Units, drawing revision and the part or assembly name.
  • Critical dimensions, fits and GD&T where function requires them; distinguish these from general tolerances.
  • Thread callouts, including standard, size, pitch or threads per inch, depth and whether the hole is blind or through.
  • Surface finish, coating or treatment, plus any areas that must remain uncoated.
  • Inspection, material certification or traceability requirements, if applicable.
  • Requested delivery destination and target date.

Before you upload: a quick file check

  • Open the exported 3D file in a neutral viewer and confirm the geometry and units.
  • Make sure the 3D model and 2D drawing show the same revision.
  • Mark critical-to-function features on the drawing; do not rely on a general tolerance note for a special fit.
  • Include one file per part or clearly identify part numbers and quantities in an assembly package.

Can Lauens quote from STL alone?

You can submit an STL for review, but it is a triangle mesh rather than a conventional solid CAD model. Mesh quality, missing dimensions and unclear tolerances can prevent a reliable machining quote. A STEP model and a dimensioned PDF drawing usually reduce follow-up questions.

Send your CNC files for review

Ready to source a custom part? Upload your drawing for a CNC quote. If you are still selecting a process, see our CNC machining service and specify whether you expect milling, turning or both. Our team will review the files and clarify any missing manufacturing details before pricing.
